Summary on Allegory of The Cave

In the story Allegory of the Cave by Plato, Plato tries to show people, how they can embrace philosophy and learn from it. Plato uses allegory to describe how we can embrace philosophy and how we would feel if we didn't have philosophy in our lives. Socrates says that a man would be blinded by the sun and that he wont be able to be see what reality is.. afterwards he said that his ideas of the world comes through knowledge and that if people cant see that, they would be blind....

  1. Hey Steven! I'm Erica, I just wanted to give you a few pointers on your blog about The Allegory of the Cave.

    1. Is the main idea (thesis) of the passage clearly and correctly stated?
    No.
    2. Are the important supporting ideas stated correctly and fully?
    No.

    3. Are all (or nearly all) unimportant ideas excluded?
    Yes.

    4. Is the summary in the writer’s own words?
    Yes.

    5. Is the summary written with few grammar/spelling/style errors?
    Yes.

    6. Does the summary retain the sense and organization of the original passage?
    No.

    7. Is personal opinion included in the summary?
    No.

Here are some few pointers I would take to improve the summary of the Allegory of the Cave excerpt by Plato! In order to write the summary you have to show reading comprehision of the text. First I'd underline main and key points in the excerpt if confused, I'd ask for a better explanation. Once you get all the main and key points of the text, you turn the main points into a thesis, and from the thesis you create topic sentences that'll lead to detailed examples. You've grasp the idea of Plato trying to separate the real world vs illusion in your summary. Talk about how, the "reality"(illusion)to the prisoners were the cave, but once they were englightened by the "real world" they had to adjust and become fond to that. Yes, at first it was a struggle but as so they made a habit of being in the cave they, had to make a habit of being outside of it to. Just use the passage and example that Plato gives without inserting your own opinion.

  2. Hi Steven. My names Nicole and i just read your summary of the Allegory of the Cave. I couldn't help to notice that not ALL the Main ideas are there. If you couldn't comprehend you should have asked way more questions to get a better understanding of what you were reading. Your Summary is in your own words and that's important but you missed a huge part in that summary and that's your personal opinion. In your summary is see that you've mentioned the prisoners illusion vs. reality but you needed to discuss the reality just as much as the illusion. WHAT happened once they were out of their illusion. How did they get into that habit? Well other then that you did a good job.

  3. Hello Steven, thank you for your comments especially the proof reading suggestion. After re-reading my summary I noticed that I do need to make some adjustments concerning grammar. However, I did not see any spelling errors.

Also, I liked your suggestion of using the word perspective instead of light. I didn't think to use that word at the time. I would like to know why you felt the last sentence from the first paragraph was unimportant. Also, can you please point out what you feel was a quote and not my own words?
Again thank you for the help and good luck to the both of you as well.
